report by Remie Law in Verona, Italy
A Visual Feast of Veronese Cuisine
The Veneto region that encompasses Venice at the coast, inland Verona and Lake Garda, lying at the foot of the Dolomites mountains, was and is the more affluent part of Italy. Here the rich merchants of Venice traded with the known world & are familiar with the exotic spices of the East. They put these to good use, blending with their local fresh produce of rice, corn, wheat, sea fish from the coast & freshwater fish of Lake Garda, local vegetables like aragula, asparagus, peppers & onions & an abundance of fruit. For meats, the regional specialty is horsemeat, but pork in the form of hams & salami, lamb or young goat, game meats like rabbit are all on the menu. Of course, quality vineyards are cultivated alongside these agricultural & agrofarms, as a matter of course.
As I browsed through the collection of photos of the various dishes & wines I enjoyed in one short trip to Italy, I realised the enormity of my task to concisely record the gastronomic traditions of just one province of Italy.
Throughout my stay, I experienced a wide range of dishes & wine that showed why Italian cooking is so popular worldwide. Using several basic ingredients, they create imaginative dishes that are both visual feasts & tastes good, too! At times, I was too engrossed in consuming what was served in front of me, that I forgot to record it. However, when I had presence of mind, I capture for your visual delight. I paid about S$60 per person for these meals, including wine. Extremely good value compared to similar restaurants in Singapore.
I'll let the photos speak for the cuisine & wines, so do enjoy this visual feast, served up for you!
