J Portugal Ramos

Michel Fonne & J Portugal Ramos
05 November 2004
an exclusive event
for

Winston Yee with Michel Fonne

Mr. Michel Fonne on this second visit to Singapore, was feted to some local specialties at Changi Village Food Centre. Generous servings of chilli clams and kangkong did not deter him, downed with bottles of Chinese Tsing Tao beer . He enjoyed the meal, so much, that we returned, on the last day, for another round of fresh seafood, local style!

Of course, we did treat him to a Chinese Banquet meal! Our nearly 60 guests at Pine Garden, The Pines clearly enjoyed quality white wines from Michel Fonne. They were treated to highly-rated Tokay-Pinot Gris and 55-year vines Rebgarten Riesling at a pre-dinner tasting. At the banquet proper, they enjoyed a Pinot Blanc, Bennwihr Riesling and a Grand Cru Marckrain Gewertztraminer.

The red wines were from our wholly red producer from Portugal, Joao Portugal Ramos, who was unable to join the event, due to unforseen circumstances. The pre-dinner tasting showed off his Syrah and Conde de Vimioso Reserva. At dinner, two local Portuguese varieties were presented - Trincadiera and Aragones. Both wines matched well with the special dishes cooked up by Executive Chef Jimmy Wong.

Among the highlights of the programme was an authentic rendition of a Mongolian dance by ethnic Mongolian student, Ms. Ta Na, to the enthusiastic applause of several China visitors.

Mr. Ch'ng Poh Tiong finding out about our Alsace wines.

We were delighted with the presence of two lovely ladies from Asia Cuisine & Wine Scene magazine at our booth.

The second edition of "Wine for Asia" proved successful in attracting local wine enthusiasts. The 'public' days showed good response from people keen to explore new wines and looking to stock up for the year-end festivities.

Strong presence was made by lesser known countries like Austria, Romania, Spain, Portugal & Germany. Better known Australia, New Zealand & France were also present. However, the largest delegation was from Italy, which showed its interest in this market with sample wines from all over the whole of Italy.

Among the visitors interested in M. Michel Fonne's Alsace wines were Mr. Ch'ng Poh Tiong, publisher of The Wine Review and Ms. Jenny Tan, Wine writer, Asia Cuisine & Wine Scene magazine. From India, we were privileged with a visit from Mr. Vincent Fernandes, Deputy Editor of Ambrosia magazine. All of these were impressed by the quality of the Alsace wines.

The consumers, who attended the Fair was similarly impressed with the wines and we were pleasantly surprised with substantial sales of the various wines on show.

This annual show has certainly found good support from the local wine consumer. Now, we need to inform & bring in the wine consumer from the region to make this show an unqualified success.

The strong Italian delegation (top down) Elena Walch (Alto Adige), Rocca (Puglia), Gusto (representing various wineries) among them.

New wine merchant, Vintner's Forte made their presence felt with a wide showing of wines from the Mosel region of Germany. All qualified quality level wines were shown. Kabinett, Spatlese, Auslese and Icewein were offered for sampling. The Australians were well represented by Republic Wines, owned by the son of Jimmy Watson of JWT fame. These wines, bearing the Jimmy Watson name, attracted many since Australian wines were best known in Singapore. The Cavas & still wines of Penedes, Spain was also represented, here, by Vallformosa. Their products were well received by enthusiastic consumers.

Full facilities & a wonder of Malaysia's countryside at its doorstep. Place your booking for both dinner & room with one phone call, for your most unique Malaysian experience, ever!!! This iconic Chinese restaurant is the oldest fine-dining restaurant in Johor Baru. Mention it to any taxi driver in Johor Baru & there will be no repeating required. Now, under the deft guidance of the second generation, the cuisine is continually being refined while adhering to traditional norms of fine Chinese banqueting. Overnight accomodations may be had at premier Grand Blue Wave Hotel or Eden Resort Hotel, both within leisurely walking distance from New Hong Kong.

Both events were successes. The people of Batu Pahat enthusiastically supported the event with turning up in force to romance the moon. An 8-course Chinese banquet was served accompanied by wines from Elfenhof (Austria) and Warburn Estate (Australia). The guests partied through the night distracted by gifts of wine from Winston Wine Cellar. In Johor Baru, the response was also good despite the Mooncake festival weekend. The splendid New Hong Kong Restaurant played host to 30 persons, who enthusiastically endorsed the fine wines from emerging Western Australian winery - Ferngrove, located in the cool Frankland River sub-region.

The Confrerie de la Chaine des Rotisseurs (Johor Chapter) held their "Treasures from the Land of the Rising Sun" dining event at Grand BlueWave, Johor Baru on 28 Aug 2004. Guest of Honour was Dato Lau Foo Sun, the Baillieu for Malaysia. The weekend causeway traffic jam did not deter Datin Lau from joining her husband. She trudged the entire length of the causeway, avoiding inconsiderate drivers, to arrive in time for the event!

Among the highlight dishes served were Gyutan Shioyaki (Grilled Salted Ox Tongue) and Sanshoku Somen (Tri-Colour Noodles in Chilled Sauce).

An excellent cold Sake accompanied the dinner supplemented by a Molletto Prosecco (Piave, Italy) as reception drink and with dinner, Virgin Block Semillon Chardonnay (Western Australia) and Umberto Cesari La Macollina Sangiovese de Romagna Riserva (Emilia-Romagna, Italy), supplied by Winston Wine Cellars, were served.

The next highlight event due in October is a Grand Cru dinner featuring +90-points rated wines from the fabulous 2000 Bordeaux vintage.

Mr. Winston Yee joined the "official" delegation to VINITALY 2004 (1 -5 April 2004). Vinitaly is the largest wine trade show in the world with hundreds of wineries around the world taking part. Besides meeting the people behind the wines, Winston took part in extensive & specialist tastings like this one (top left photo) of a full range of Brunellos di Montalcino. Such a wide range of Brunellos is virtually impossible to duplicate except at Vinitaly.

Winston met up with various wine producers to discuss their regional wines & sampled a full range with Mr. Joseph Tham, owner of New Hongkong Restaurant, Johor Baru. (centre left)

Further in-depth tastings were conducted with shortlisted wine producers at their booths. (bottom left)

Armed with such in-depth knowledge, Winston can confidently showcase his selections, in the near future.
