A good distance away & in a much warmer clime, is the dry & rugged inland region of Alentejo in Portugal, bordering Spain's Extremadura region. Without the cooling influence of the Atlantic breezes, this region used to produce harsh wines meant for local consumption. However, Joao has tempered the harshness and managed to refine the wines making them more country gentry but still with brooding robustness & full of terrior personality. His efforts were recognised with an invitation to the 2001 Decanter Fine Wine Encounter event. Since then, his work continue to improve and is now considered one of the finest winemakers in Portugal, consulting various wineries while continuing to produce is wines of distinct personality.

The first batch of their wines have just arrived in Singapore/Malaysia. Prices start from S$40.00 NETT, with Joao's best effort "Marques de Borba Reserva 2000" at $100.00 NETT.
